Kanban embraces the scientific method explicitly; "Improve Collaboratively (using models & the scientific method)" and Lean implementations can be more effectively supported by a sound understanding of the philosophy of science and proper experimental design. This presentation will briefly explore the basics of the scientific method, including deductive, inductive and abductive logic, probability, parsimony, and hypothesis testing. Through a series of group exercises, the audience will grapple with the concepts and return home ready to create an execute their first scientific experiment. What did you do today? Are you blocked? All three of these questions assume the rest of the organization is ignorant about your work. With kanban, this information is already apparent. Therefore, the Standup can now be a net value-add meeting. For a self-aware team, "blocked" is obvious and already dealt with by the standup. So what are the non-conforming elements to discuss at the standup?

Variation - why is our work subject to predictably unpredictable disturbances?
Cognitive Bias - what is the board showing us that we otherwise wouldn't admit to ourselves?
Kaizen - what improvement tasks are underway, what are the results we are seeing, and what does this imply?
Complexity - your task might not be "blocked" but it may well be complex - how does that change your work?

Jim Benson will show that the standup is a great place for a deep dive into our daily work, fueled by Lean thinking, psychology, and complexity theory.
